Jun. 14--HARLINGEN -- Stars and Stripes. Old Glory. The American flag.
The Continental Congress adopted the national flag on June 14, 1777, to promote the new nation's pride and unity.
President Harry S Truman signed legislation in 1949 to designate June 14 as Flag Day, although June 14 was recognized beginning in the early 1900s.
Since then, Flag Day has become a time to honor what the American flag stands for, and the people who have stood by it.
