INTRODUCTION

The formulation and application of paint coatings to protect structures is a multibillion dollar per year industry. Consequently, significant economic losses could result if increased levels of atmospheric sulfur dioxide (S[O.sub.2]) appreciably shortened the lifetime of a paint coating. As a result of the presence of atmospheric pollutants, it has now become important to determine how various paint films protect the underlying substrate from these pollutant gases.
