French Opera in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, Pendragon's projected series of seventy-five volumes containing about one hundred works, will provide an invaluable overview of a repertory that seems more central with each passing moment. As recordings and stage revivals accumulate, a new hierarchy of judgment is bound to arise, and many of the forthcoming volumes, which may appear to be only of scholarly interest, could prove of great practical value. Neither of the two current issues could be termed an undiscovered masterpiece, but both are worthy in differing ways ...
