INTRODUCTION

Despite a voluminous sociological literature on the modern family, little attention has been paid to the ways in which roles and functions are developed and shaped. It is often assumed that knowledge related to family relations and child rearing practices is traditional, or somehow acquired as commonsense through a-process of cultural osmosis. I argue, however, that the twentieth century has seen systematic attempts to transform the form and content of child rearing and family relations.
