Protector and pollutant, ozone is a form of oxygen that has aroused scientific and public interest over the past few decades. Less well known are the controversies sparked in the immediate wake of its discovery by the German chemist Christian Friedrich Schobein (1799-1868).
Schonbein spent his career at the University of Basel, his discoveries bringing renown both to himself and his adopted city. His first communication, outside of Basel, of his principal discovery is contained in a letter, written in 1840, to his revered English friend, Michael Faraday.
