As a young girl growing up in Pine City, Minn., Rhiannon Sauter remembers "going out for coffee" with her grandfather nearly every night. That's what Paul Rydberg called those trips. Actually, he always had a Diet Coke. So did she.

They would talk, often about sports. At the time, Rhiannon was in grade school, playing on a boys' hockey team. "He would say, `You are better than them boys, don't let them push you around.' It stuck with me," Sauter said.
