The photographs on these pages came from archival slides left to the American Geographical Society by Alexander Melamid, a particularly well-traveled member of the AGS Council.

Dr. Melamid, who was born in Germany in 1914 and died in Mexico in 2001, earned his bachelor's degree at the London School of Economics in 1938 and his doctorate at the New School for Social Research. Before entering academe in 1949, he worked in the petroleum trade, and he continued to serve as a consultant to the oil industry and to port authorities around the world while on faculties first at the New ...
