Philip Schaff (1819-93), who was born in Switzerland and educated in the German universities of Tubingen, Halle and Berlin, immigrated to the United States of America in 1843 to accept a teaching position at the seminary of the German Reformed Church at Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. In 1863 he moved to Union Theological Seminary in New York where he taught until his death in 1893. He and his colleague at Mercersburg, John W.
