Professor Duby's book is the first volume in Hachette's History of France. Its claim to cover the period up to 1460 is thin; after the mid-thirteenth century Duby provides a mere sketch, seventy pages out of three hundred. He asserts that others know more about the later period. This is true enough, but it is a major tribute to this distinction that he has been able to deal with publishers in his sic volo sic iubeo style.
