On December 26, 2003 a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck Arg-i-Bam or Citadel of Bam in the southeastern Kerman province of Iran. The ancient city founded more than 2,000 years ago was flattened. The earthquake killed more than 26,000 people and destroyed the houses made of mud bricks, clay and straw.
