As I follow the hotly debated proposal to shut off public broadcasting's federal subsidy, the ``tough decisions'' on federal spending I have so frequently promoted are hitting home.

For more than a decade, I volunteered extensively as an on-camera pitchman in the Twin Cities for KTCA-TV's unloved fund-raising ``pledge drives.'' Don't get me started about how ``You are the public in public television _ quality television you and your family won't find anywhere else.''
