The scene is familiar to anyone who has attended a liturgy at a nursing home. Before Mass, a woman leads the crowd in practicing hymns. An African-American resident, who once may have prided herself on a fine voice and familiarity with hymns, attempts a solo of "Amazing Grace." She soon stumbles on the words, and puts her head in her hands.
Also in this scene is a dedicated group of young and middle-aged people who appear to be the residents' longtime friends. They escort residents into the spacious, tiled activity room of Cabrini Rehabilitation Center in Manhattan ...
