The pending demise of the Rider Bennett law firm has left Brookfield Properties Corp. with a large chunk of soon-to-be-vacant office space in the heart of downtown Minneapolis for which it gave free rent in 2005-06.

Brookfield now is suing Rider Bennett, asking for about $11.5 million in rent that it maintains the law firm owes as a result of its recent decision to shut down.

An entity of Toronto-based Brookfield, which owns 33 South Sixth Street (formerly the International Multifoods Tower), is claiming the law firm's plan to cease ...
