READERS OF JANE AUSTEN ever since the early nineteenth century have felt her kinship with Shakespeare. As early as 1821, Richard Whateley praised Austen's power of characterization as "hardly exceeded by Shakespeare himself" (Littlewood 327). And in his recent book, Recreating Jane Austen (2001), John Wiltshire finds subtle language to explore the evidence that Austen is "akin to Shakespeare," evidence that he says is not "on the surface but within the structure of her texts" (62).
