New evidence of anthropogenic palaeoenvironmental disturbance in the Pacific island of Mangaia, or the Cook Islands, which indicate that human settlement existed in the area by 2500 b.p., is challenged. An analysis of three sediment cores is said to indicate the presence of people on the islands by 2500 b.p. However, palaeoenvironmental data could not demonstrate human occupation and any evidence of prehistoric environment needs to be subjected to archaeological testing.
