Maimonides and Rav Kook are considered philosophical and spiritual giants in the Jewish faith. However, these two figures had divergent beliefs on the concept of love of God. For Maimonides, love of God starts with the intellectual knowledge of God, which gradually evolves to love. In contrast, Rav Kook believed that the love of God begins non-intellectually, but becomes refined and purified by intellect. Their divergent conceptions can best be illustrated on how they interpret the Akedah, or the 'binding of Isaac.'
