May 15--NEWPORT, R.I. -- It wasn't exactly the type of day to go for a leisurely sail, but the crew of the transport ship Explorer had a job to do nevertheless.
Strong winds -- some near gale force, it seemed -- swept across Newport Harbor, kicking up whitecaps and keeping most pleasure craft at their moorings, their owners safely ashore.
But the gusts didn't seem to bother the 521-foot Explorer, which was securely anchored just south of the Newport Bridge and southwest of Goat Island, its bright orange hull visible from shore. ...
