In 1870 lumberman George Mitchell gazed out over the sparkling waters from the east shore of Little Clam Lake (present-day Lake Cadillac). He saw a jewel hidden among the towering emerald-green pines, once known only to the Ottawa Indians. Mitchell noted the natural connection of the lake with larger Big Clam Lake (present-day Lake Mitchell) to the west. He envisioned prosperous mills, along the east shore of the smaller lake where he stood. The prevailing westerly winds would assist in transporting the giant timber across both lakes. A town would surely prosper.
