The city of Auburn has appointed a fire chief from outside the fire department for the first time in its 113-year history.

Michael Hammon, a Batavia fire captain, said Monday that he has accepted an offer to become provisional fire chief and starts the job on Wednesday.

However, the appointment hinges on how he fares on an open competitive fire chief's test in November. Hammon, a former Auburn fire lieutenant, will have to post one of the top three scores on the civil service exam to make his appointment permanent. Otherwise, he'll ...
