Apr. 27--DES MOINES -- Matt Banse's actions spoke louder than his emotions.

But just barely.

The Starmont senior won the school's first Drake Relays championship as he cruised to gold in the high school shot put. It was the only area victory on the opening Thursday of the meet.

Banse wanted to make a good first impression. He succeeded wildly, heaving the shot 60 feet, 11 3/4 inches on his opening throw of the preliminaries. That left the Starmont veteran exactly 6 feet ahead of runner-up Alonzo Beserra of Davenport West.
