WEST BROOKFIELD - Like a parent loath to identify a favorite child, John Morse, president and publisher of Merriam-Webster Inc., doesn't have a favorite word.
For the past decade, though, under the watchful countenance of Charles Merriam, Mr. Morse has been chief steward of nearly half a million words as well as their spellings, definitions and origins.
Thursday night, he held an audience of two-dozen people spellbound at the Merriam-Gilbert Library, chronicling the printing and publishing career of the library's benefactor, Charles Merriam.
