Countryside: Reading the article on sweet corn (Tim King, 91/2), I noticed that there was little naming of specific varieties, and most that were named are hybrids, not OP's.

Non-hybrid, non-GM corn varieties are designated "OP," farm jargon for "open-pollinated." This means that it is theoretically pollinated by wind, without hand pollination. Notice the emphasis on "theoretically": in the case of a small plot rather than a large field, hand pollination is imperative.
