In April 2004, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) cutter DEPENDABLE encountered the M/V CONQUISTADOR in international waters, 180 nautical miles south of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The CONQUISTADOR lacked a registration number, port identification or country flag. When a USCG officer asked for the vessel's nationality, the crew claimed to be Colombian. (He also noticed a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the vessel).
