Despite his prodigious output, George Stubbs is essentially mute to historians. Unlike Thomas Gainsborough or Joshua Reynolds, Stubbs's own voice is known to us only from one source, Ozias Humphry's brief manuscript memoir. However, this silence should not blind us to the fact that Stubbs crafted his persona through a set of portraits and self-portraits produced at the height of his career in the late 1770s and 1780s.
