SEOUL (AFP) -- Incheon celebrated on Wednesday after winning hosting rights for the 2014 Asian Games, beating off a strong challenge from New Delhi.

Thousands of people erupted in joy as the news reached the western port city from Kuwait, it was announced.

''Dear citizens, Incheon was awarded the right to host the 2014 Asian Games,'' vice mayor Kim Dong-Ki declared to crowds outside Incheon City Hall, triggering jubilation and a volley of fireworks.
