The many reform movements that swept over the United States in the 1840s and 1850s and afterward tried to deal with any number of social problems, including alcoholism, women's subjugation, slavery and sex.

Sexual customs and practices were much on the mind of those reformers, and they came to different conclusions. The Shakers under Mother Ann Lee prohibited sex in any form. The Mormons practiced polygamy.
