In his survey of literary paintings, Richard Altick calculates that "pictures from Shakespeare accounted for about one fifth--some 2,300--of the total number of literary paintings recorded in catalogues of the Royal Academy between 1760 and 1900" (255). (2) Paintings of scenes from Hamlet, however, were fewer than those from Shakespeare's other plays.
