Deep under the eastern highlands of Australia, along a 2,000-mile (3,200-kilometer) corridor, myriads of small gem pockets are dispersed in the underlying crustal and even deeper mantle rocks. The pockets include sapphire and sometimes ruby, the gem varieties of the mineral corundum. Along with other gem minerals such as zircon and more prosaic grades of corundum, this hidden bounty lies imprisoned in parental pockets within the pressurized depths.
