This essay is adapted from a lecture at Hannah Arendt: Right Now, a conference co-sponsored by the NYU Institute for the Humanities and the Humanities Council at NYU, in December 2006.

I have a personal relationship to Hannah Arendt, while never having met her. She was there in the shape of her books at a transforming moment in my life. And basically, what I am today, in all sorts of different ways, politically and intellectually, has its origins in the effect that her work had on me.
