Few would contest the importance of Prince Phetsarath Ratanavongsa in the making of modern Laos. He is known as a colonial moderniser and anticolonial nationalist; several Western writers acknowledge him as the 'father of Lao nationalism' and as 'the seminal figure in the development of Lao nationalism'. (1) Yet it is surprising how little attention has actually been paid to understanding the man, his ideas and his contributions to the making of modern Laos.
