Apr. 10--Hunched in a closet-sized room off the choir loft of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Steve Ziminsky plucks a short organ pipe from its place, puts it to his lips and blows a penny-whistle chirp into the dusty air.

He selects a much larger pipe, a wooden one, and teases out another sound entirely: a moan like a foghorn carrying across water, haunting enough to raise goose-bumps under the bare bulb illuminating the pipe chamber.

For 93 years, these pipes and 998 others, give or take, have filled the sanctuary of the east ...
