The modern Greek monarchy has had a complicated and violent history. The Greece of 1827 bore little resemblance to the ancient classical state. Much of modern Greek thinking has been changed by Ottoman occupation and Western European ambition. The interference of foreign powers in Greece which was too small, underdeveloped and dependent has bred resentment towards Turkey. France, Britain and Russia were the Great Powers which recognized the independence of Greece.
