A year ago, most of the students in Hopkins High School's "Limited Formal Schooling Academy" weren't in class - anywhere.
Where they came from, many of them worked in agricultural jobs or other adult roles.
As a result, some entered English classes at Hopkins not even knowing how to hold a pencil, said Scott Endo, Hopkins High's coordinator of English as a second language (ESL).
