Although race cars sported magnesium parts in the 1920s, magnesium castings weren't extensively used in vehicles until 1936 when the Volkswagen "Beetle" was introduced. The car contained more than 18 kg (40 lb) of magnesium when it entered mass production after World War II. By 1980, Beetle production had topped the 19 million mark, accounting for a magnesium consumption of about 345,000 t (380,000 tons).
