Emily Gerber has heard all of the reasons why she shouldn't play basketball.

They all usually begin and end with her 5-foot-3 stature.

"I thought my speed helped make up for my lack of size. I just went out and tried to battle and do my best," said Gerber, who is headed to NCAA Division II St. Joseph (Ind.) to play basketball and study sports medicine this fall.

"I've had great teammates who knew what I could and what I couldn't do, especially on defense. They always had my back."
