LAST year was a year of highs for China's rapidly-expanding railway network. The opening of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the start of 200km/h operation on the Hangzhou-Zhuzhou and Ji'nan-Qingdao lines, and the upgrading of the Daquin Railway have been reflected in surging passenger numbers and burgeoning freight volumes as the railway struggles to keep pace with unprecedented economic growth.
