William Cowper's poetry which takes the mock-heroic form exudes a wide rage of moral sympathies uncharacteristic of Augustan poems taking the same form. In using the mock-heroic form, Cowper tends to reveal a troubled personality, making him vulnerable to harsh criticisms. Moreover, the providentialism that he presents in his works reflects his pessimistic regard for divine grace.
