The Frick Collection has received a highly important gift from the distinguished collector Eugene V. Thaw. A beautiful marble portrait bust by the great 18th-century French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828), it represents Madame His, the wife of Pierre-Francois His, a German banker who lived in the area of the Faubourg St-Honore in Paris, not far from Houdon's home and studio. The bust, executed in 1774/75, and shown at the Salon of 1775, is a brilliant example of Houdon's skill in carving marble when he was at the peak of his powers. It is in a remarkable state of ...
