BYSTANDERS who try to help heart attack victims with mouth- to- mouth resuscitation could be doing more harm than good, it is claimed.
First- aiders are currently advised to employ both mouth-to-mouth and chest compressions.
But such compressions need to be administered continuously and consistently and researchers say breaking off to carry out mouth-to-mouth could put the victim at greater risk.
They also point out that many more bystanders may be willing to help if they did not have to carry out mouth- to- mouth.
