Marie Antoinette is undergoing renovations. More than 200 years after her violent death, she has been revived, most recently as the star of a warm, sympathetic film directed by Sofia Coppola. Despite the fanfare surrounding the film's premiere, it is only the culmination of a larger discursive trend: Marie Antoinette as young and misunderstood, a prisoner of protocol, her royal relations, and of France.
