Ask anyone who is not a Civil War buff what was the northernmost engagement of the Civil War, and he probably will think of Gen. Robert E. Lee's invasion of Pennsylvania. Gettysburg was indeed the high water mark for the Army of Northern Virginia. Had Lee carried the day there; his armies would have been many miles north of Washington and in a position to surround and invade the capital.
