Mar. 9--TULSA -- The American Red Cross has begun screening its blood supply for Chagas disease, an often fatal, insect borne illness native to Central and South America. The test, added Jan. 29, marks the first time in three years the Red Cross has expanded blood supply screening; the last test added was for West Nile virus. The Red Cross runs 13 tests on blood and a bacteria test on platelets. The parasite that causes Chagas, Trypanosoma cruzi, lives in the digestive tract of triatomine bugs.
