Major buildings increasingly demonstrate the ingenuity of structural engineers to provide distinctive form. Indeed, most buildings dubbed iconic by the press could be criticised as whimsical and arbitrary--the engineer's contribution. Which might lead to the question as to why clients employ architects at all--why not eliminate the middle man and go directly to the structural engineer?
