It's named for its size, brute strength, and bullish-looking head. The bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) is really a char, but it is kin enough to brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) that they sometimes interbreed. That and other problems, such as competition with its cousin, the lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), which was introduced into the Columbia River drainage from east of the Continental Divide, led to the bull trout's listing in 1998 as a threatened species.
