Jack London, who wrote at a time when there was controversy over the New Woman, created female characters who were free thinking, physically capable and economically independent without being mannish. London succeeded in making his characters such as Frona Welse, Dede Mason and Paula Forrest feminine by ensuring that they wore women's clothing and by not endorsing free love. A study of his novels chronologically indicates that London realized the problematics of making a woman free and capable without allowing her to express her passions and desires.
