WE think nothing of having women in parliament, reading the news and running businesses - but it hasn't always been that way.

Today's Girl Power has its roots in the actions of New York female factory workers who, on March 8, 1857, protested about pay and conditions - laying the foundations for the first women's union.

Since then women have fought for everything from the right to drive to being able to work as a Beefeater.
