Betty Nunnelee came to the Big Bend on vacation 30 years ago and never really went home again.

This vast region of West Texas, where the Rio Grande River bends south along the Mexico border, captured her heart. She says she can "inhale the beauty" of this high desert, with its red mountains and tawny plains dotted with cactus and bluebonnets that grow almost 3 feet high in the spring.
