Caste among Hindus in Mauritius has become a basis for formation of political interest groups rather than hierarchical social relations. The erosion of traditional caste relations is due to factors related to immigration, the system of indenture and the nature of Mauritian society. Caste no longer determines ritual status, marriage or occupation and does not limit social mobility. Thus, Hindus in Mauritius have become more homogenized and egalitarian.
