Joseph Harris has pointed out the relation between Beowulf's last words and the Germanic death-song genre, but the confessional passage (lines 2732b-43a) may draw on verses from the biblical Book of Proverbs (vi.16-19). The passages from 'Beowulf' and Proverbs each list seven items, four of which are common to both. The 'Beowulf' passage thus reflects the use of Christian themes within a traditional Germanic genre.
