Building imagery with its quality of stasis is employed allegorically in a variety of ways in medieval literature. The static image of the building may represent the stillness of eternity or moral stability. Exits and entrances are often emphasized, either in terms of keeping enemies out or difficulties in gaining entry. Works discussed include Huon de Meri's 'Tournament of Antichrist,' Robert Grosseteste's 'Chasteau d'Amour' and William Langland's 'Piers Plowman.'
